Alberta Hydrology Explorer
Full-Stack Hydrology, Climate, and GIS Application | Prototype
Alberta Hydrology Explorer is a full-stack, interactive web application that I designed and developed to analyze and visualize hydrometric, climate, and spatial data across Alberta.
This project is currently under active development as a prototype and blueprint for a production-grade environmental data platform. It is designed to reflect real-world engineering and GIS workflows, integrating data acquisition, processing, analysis, and visualization into a single deployable system.
The application is fully dynamic and data-driven. It integrates real hydrometric data from the Water Survey of Canada, with built-in caching and fallback datasets to ensure reliability. Users can interact with live or cached data, explore watershed conditions, and generate insights through responsive maps, charts, and analytical tools.
Key features include:
Interactive GIS mapping with hydrometric and climate station layers
Real-time and cached streamflow data integration
Hydrologic analysis including flow statistics, flow duration curves, and low-flow indicators
Climate analysis including precipitation, temperature trends, and period comparisons
Dynamic dashboards that update based on user-selected stations and time ranges
Exportable tables and figures for reporting and decision support
The system uses a modern full-stack architecture:
Frontend built with React and Leaflet for interactive mapping
Backend built with FastAPI for data processing, API design, and hydrologic calculations
Data workflows that include ETL, caching, and fallback strategies for reliability
This project demonstrates:
Applied hydrology and climate analysis
GIS integration and spatial data handling
Full-stack application development
API design and data engineering practices
Building resilient systems using real-world environmental data
